1 The Project.

The academic world has recently been embracing the use of clickers and audio response systems. These are little devices used during lectures that allow instructors to have the classroom vote on multiple choice questions and receive results in real-time. While these devices have many benefits, such as encouraging in-class participation, they are expensive, come with limited capabilities, and have a short life cycle.

Where to go from there? In order to be able to improve the technology, it was important to identify the pain-points from both parties involved: the students and instructors. To determine these pain points, we interviewed students from classes that used clickers during lectures. In addition, we worked very closely with Ryan Martin, a Queen’s assistant physics professor. Ryan was able to provide insight on the pain points he faces with current clicker technology and allowed us to test our new pilot project in his classes.

  • - Wanted a way of getting students more involved before the lecture

3 The Sketches.

4 Our Solution.

As a team, we created an entirely new approach and experience from the previous clicker system. Codename Engage is an open-source application designed to increase engagement between students and course content, both outside and inside the classroom. While students will still be able to vote in real-time during lectures; they wilt have access to various types of questions types. Students can now interact with courseware outside the classroom with the ability to review results from past slide-decks, submit potential questions for future lectures, and view their grades. Engage also runs entirely through a web browser, meaning students can take advantage of technology they already own such as their tablets, laptops, and mobile devices, eliminating the need to purchase additional hardware or worry about compatibility issues.

5 The Application.

Student Dashboard

At a glance, the dashboard displays all the information regarding to a student's classes. Students may participate in ongoing live lectures or review previous lectures.

Live Sessions

Life sessions are controlled by the instructor. Once prompted, students can submit their response until the instructor closes the response period. Once closed, the instructor has the ability to display the results of the poll.

Question Types

The application allows for 4 different types of questions that can be asked.

Creating Sessions

As an instructor, creating lecture sessions is done through the session editor. Additionally, instructors can choose to import questions asked by students.
